FAQ

INSTALLATION

Campaigns featuring 3rd party elements are notoriously difficult to install properly. To avoid problems, all elements used in our campaigns are included. Unless you're experienced with installing campaigns we suggest you use the auto-install.
The files in each package are configured to extract to their correct locations. These are simple WinZip self-extractors.

Double-click on the EXE file to start the process. The path is directed to the CFS2 default location. Use the Browse feature to redirect the install path to your own Combat Flight Simulator 2 root directory folder if necessary. The only things we either cannot or are not prepared to do are activating scenery & modifiying default files.
Please read the install instructions included with the various packages carefully.

CFS2 DIFFICULTY & REALISM SETTINGS

IMPORTANT CAUTION: In Korea, you have entered the very different world of jet combat, where speed and G-forces become critical factors and structural failure a real concern. It is important to understand that CFS2 was created for prop aircraft and, simply stated, the sim's performance parameters are not broad enough to cope reliably with all aspects of jet performance. The primary drawback is known as "Exploding Jets", which is catastrophic structural failure that causes your aircraft to self-destruct in mid-air.

THIS CAN BE EASILY AVOIDED BY MAKING THE FOLLOWING CHANGE IN YOUR CFS2.CFG FILE:

Open the CFS2.CFG file (Main CFS2 directory) in Notepad.
Scroll down to the [REALISM] section & change the StressDamage=True entry to StressDamage=False
Exit Notepad saving changes. That's it. No more Exploding Jets.

THIS SETTING CAN BE LEFT IN PLACE PERMANENTLY OR CHANGED BACK AT ANY TIME MANUALLY.
IT CANNOT BE CHANGED FROM ANY OF THE IN-PROGRAM MENUS.

We suggest that the campaign, the missions and the aircraft should be flown on EASY Campaign/Mission Difficulty settings, and EASY Flight Model setting for your first run-through. This will give you some time to get accustomed to flying jets. Then move on to the more challenging settings. All other "Realism" settings may be used with any of the available menu selections from the beginning.

UPDATE - Before using Medium or Hard flight model settings please install the patch here

ACTIVATING SCENERY

The Pacific Far East scenery is included with this package by kind permission of Steve McClelland.
If you used the auto-install a folder named FarEast will be installed to your CFS2\SCENEDB folder.
The FarEast folder should be activated from the CFS2 Scenery Library. Please read the included instructions carefully. Tute here.

Steve's scenery is popular & available as a separate download. If you already have it we suggest deactivating it & using our version. The update adding missing BGL files for Korea is already included. We might also add our own air bases from time to time for use in future missions. Providing the FarEast folder is activated from the SCENEDB directory these will be automatically installed with new campaigns to avoid activating them separately.

Some scenery by other designers covering the same area might possibly conflict with Steve's scenery.
To avoid problems we suggest temporarily disabling it while using our campaigns.

AIRBASES.DAT FILE

IMPORTANT CAUTION: In order for the Advance Info function of CFS2 to work properly, you MUST at the very least follow the manual entry instructions for the modification of your CFS2\INFO\airbases.dat file that are found in the campaign installation instructions. Otherwise any attempt to use Advanced Info will cause a CFS2 crash to desktop.

HOWEVER, TO GUARANTEE A TROUBLE-FREE USE OF THIS FUNCTION, IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU REPLACE YOUR CURRENT AIRBASES.DAT FILE WITH THE ONE PROVIDED IN THE CAMPAIGN DOWNLOAD PACKAGE.
YOU CAN BACKUP YOUR ORIGINAL, IF IT HAS BEEN CUSTOMIZED, AND REPLACE IT LATER.

IF YOU ARE USING A STOCK AIRBASES.DAT FILE, YOU CAN KEEP OURS AS A PERMANENT INSTALL BECAUSE IT CONTAINS THE STOCK FILE ENTRIES PLUS THOSE FOR THE KOREAN BASES.

WINTER SCENERY

Some testers have suggested it would be nice to fly the missions in winter. We have tried Dean Reilly's Korean Replacement Winter Textures posted HERE. They work well with Steve's scenery but it would be too big a download to include in the package.
The seasons cannot be changed in CFS2 & you can either have snow or not. See SCREENSHOT

If you wish to try it we suggest using Option #2 in the included install instructions.
Follow the instructions carefully making a backup copy of the CFS2\SCENEDB\world\texture folder first.

THE AIRCRAFT - Please read the PILOT'S NOTES on using jets in combat.

All aircraft included with the packages are specially designed or modified for our campaigns. If you have other versions of some aircraft it's important to use our versions. This will avoid problems & possible error messages when selecting missions. The Player aircraft can be changed from the Single Missions menu.

CFS2 "100 PLANE" LIMIT.

A considerable number of extra aircraft will be installed to run the campaigns. Depending on the number of 3rd party aircraft you already have installed this could take you over the CFS2 "100 plane" limit & cause problems. This can be fixed by dragging a few existing addons into a Hangar subfolder within the CFS2\Aircraft directory. Please be careful not to remove default aircraft or those others might be aliased to.

By far the best method is to use a duplicate install of CFS2 specifically for this & similar campaigns.

DUPLICATE INSTALL of CFS2 (or any other MS sim)

To do this, simply rename the existing CFS2 root directory folder to any other name.
Then insert the CD & install in the usual way.
You will now have two separate versions of CFS2 which will run independently.
