This is an unarmed version of Agusta Bell AB-212 SW (Equiped only with submarine sonar radar) helicopter of the H.N.H.C.( Hellenic Navy Hellicopter Command). As a tribute to the PA-21 that was sent in 1997 by the Hellenic Hqs to check if Turkish comandos have really landed on one of the Imia small Greek islands in the Aegean boarder. It was confirmed by luminating its high beam lights on them and reported it. Moments later, the helicopter lost contact and finaly confirmed as crashed on the sea few minutes later either by Turkish seals shots against it,or by a mechanical malfunction caused by Hi-Tec electronic jams and countermeasures. Nobody will ever know the true reasons. The names of the three brave Hellenic Navy Agusta Bell AB-212 helicopter crew were Comander (HN) Christodoulos Karathanasis, Lt. Comander (HN) Panayotis Vlahakos, Ensign (HN) Ektoras Yialopsos.Ironicaly the Turkish comandos team who landed on the east isle, were all killed while training one week later during a helicopter transport.
The PN21 was the symbol of the H.N.H.C.as it was the first of the fleet and the one that the first Navy pilots where trained with in Italy. After the crash it was replaced by PN-31 in its place.
H.N.H.C. operates a fleet of 12 craft of this AB212 twin engine UH-1N and 2 of the EW type(electronic warefare).
