Randolph AFB,Texas Scenery for FSX
------------------------------------------------------------
By James Shaddox
This scenery is of Randolph AFB located near San Antonio, Texas. RAFB has great historical significance for the U.S. Air Force. It was built in the early 1930s to fulfill a need for a pilot training facility. Most of the original buildings were designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. For many years from the '30s to the '60s it was the main site of the Army Air Corps' (and then Air Force) Aviation Cadet program. It is still active today, with training programs using the T-38 Talon, T-6 Texan II, and Beech T-1 Jayhawk. It serves as headquarters for the Air Force's Air Education and Training Command.
This is the fifth version of this scenery created for MSFS, beginning with MSFS 98. This scenery has been years in the making, with great attention paid to detail, and most of the building textures were taken from digital photography. New buildings have been added since the last version. The night lighting of the base and adjacent cities was designed to be as realistic as possible, especially in the area of street lighting.
This scenery has seasonal ground textures. There are also a few static aircraft parked on the ramp - T-38s and T6 Texan IIs.
Those familiar with the base will immediately recognize the main administration building nicknamed "Taj Mahal", which is the tall white building near the center of the base with the beacon on top. All buildings on base in this scenery were custom made.
Revisions since the last version include the addition of many buildings, including complete base housing. Now nearly all structures are in the scenery.
There are a lot of buildings in this scenery. Should you have framerate issues, consider removing the KRND_housing.bgl file. This will remove all of the base housing, but all of the other structures, including hangars, will remain.
In addition, I have added AI traffic, in the form of T-6 Texan II planes which taxi out, take off, and perform touch-and-go operations all day. If you wish to have the AI traffic, you don't need to do anything, other than place the included AI aircraft folders in your FSX aircraft folder, as outlined in "Installation" below. If you don't want the AI traffic, simply remove the file named "KRND traffic.bgl" from the scenery folder.
Just for fun, there is a model of the Alamodome, in downtown San Antonio.

This scenery is dedicated to my late father, Leon M.Shaddox, USAF.

SCENERY BUILD CREDITS- thanks to all of these fine folks and the work they do:
Airport Design Editor by Jon Masterson, AKA Scruffy Duck
T-38 Talon static model and ramp lighting - Jim Dhaenens (and many thanks for the encouragement!)
T6 Texan II AI aircraft - Model and flight dynamics by David Friswell. Original textures by Jens-Ole Kjolberg. Repainted by Lewis Magruder. Pilot textures by David Brice.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Microsoft Flight Simulator X
That's it. All required files are provided herein.
INSTALLATION - Follow all steps below in order for this scenery to work correctly!
------------
Unzip the zip file into a temporary directory. You should have the main folder "RAFB FSX" and within it two subfolders, "scenery" and "texture". You can place the "RAFB FSX" intact in FSX's "Addon Scenery" folder, or you can create a folder outside of FSX, and name it RAFB; My personal preference is to keep my scenery folder outside FSX, like this:
C:\RAFB FSX\
\Scenery - (all .bgl files will be in this folder)
\Texture - (all the texture files will be in this folder, ie., .dds, .bmp, and .agn)
There is also an effects file named fx_taxi_light_blue.fx in the zip which should be moved to your FSX "effects" folder - this is required in order for some of the taxiway lights to show up.
Finally there is a folder for the T6 Texan II AI aircraft. Place this folder in your Microsoft Flight Simulator X/simobjects/aircraft folder.
Now start FSX and from the main menu select "settings", "scenery library", "add area". In the "add area" screen navigate to the scenery folder you created. Hit "OK", activate the scenery with the check box on the "scenery library" page if it's not already checked, and return to the simulator. Restart FSX, Select "free flight", under "State" select Texas, under "City" select Universal City and under "Airport" select Randolph AFB and click OK. You should find yourself sitting on the runway.
That's it! Enjoy.
