Thank you for downloading this scenery for RAF Lyneham (EGDL), wiltshire, UK This accurate and detailed scenery of RAF Lyneham has been in development for 2 years, but in fact started in 2005 when a version was released to the general flight sim community as a freeware addon for fs2004. Since then microsoft released the fsx platform with many improvements. With the closure of the airbase in 2012 due to defence cuts, I have released this tribute to the services performed by the base, it's fleet and it's airmen since the early 50's. Great time has been spent in research and detail to replicate the base as accurate as possible as it was when it closed in 2012. My connection with the base goes back to the early 70's when the Comet C4 and Bristol Britannia were stationed there. I feel proud to have spent time flying in those aircraft, the first jet airliner and first turboprop aircraft before they were retired in the 70's. Of course the base also housed the c130 hercules transport fleet, which continued right up to the closure of the base last year. The base also saw the introduction of the c130J a few years ago to replace the aging c130k aircraft which have now been retired, with the present c130j fleet being moved to the nearby base of Brize norton. The airfield project has been divided into various sections of importance. Firstly, I wanted to capture the accuracy of the control terminal and J-type hangars on the main apron as that is where you are likely to find yourself. The second important section was to create an accurate depiction of a group of houses on the B4069 Lyneham to Chippenham road on the approach to runway 24. These things have been modelled in exacting detail and accuracy. The third section was to create the group of houses south of the air terminal known as melsome; built within the airfield perimeter. the rest of the airfield was built in lower detail to enhance frame rates; an important point when deciding how much detail to incorporate. In fact, it was felt and also found that I needed to omit certain parts of the airfield scenery to maintain decent speed. The c47 air despatch unit which consisted of 3 E-type hangars south of the airfield and the entrance comet c2 gate guard and relevant scenery. These omisions do not detract from the main airbase and allowed for the extra detail and construction of the main airbase itself! A worthy trade off I'm sure you will agree. A further note worth adding is that the airfield has been built on top of 'ORBX' England mesh and scenery and so had to consider the mesh elevations when building the perimeters of the base. ORBX scenery is well worth purchasing and truly enhances the English countryside over the default scenery. ________________________________________________________________ INSTALL NOTES This scenery needs to be manualy installed. First run the self extracting file'Lyneham_FSX.exe' which defaults to C:\Program(x86)\Microsoft Flight Simulator x. Change when prompted If different. Once installed start fsx and on the start up page click on 'Settings'.then click on 'Scenery Library'.Click on 'Add Area'. click on 'Addon Scenery'. click on'Lyneham_FSX'. Click on 'OK' then click above anywhere to add to FSx. This is a bug with Windows 7. run fsx now and enjoy! ________________________________________________________________ This scenery has been optimised for good performance, but as always, a good cpu and GPU are required to get the best. the test system is based on the following specs running with extremely dense scenery, normal autogen, 1920x1080 resolution with full AA and anisotropic filtering turned on. Ground shadows were left off and the system run without DX10. * intel Q6600 Quad core @ 2.9Ghz. * 4Gb Ram. * 9800Gt 1Gb graphics. win7 64bit. frame lock=30. average frames 30 in the stock C172. captain sim c130 = 26fps. This scenery uses a few 2048 textures.the scenery will run and display as it is but the air terminal and immediate ground textures use 2048. fsx by default runs at 1024. You need to change the " TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024" to " TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 or 4096" found in your fsx.cfg file. This is found in the following folder;- user(your name)/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/fsx.CFG. If you cannot see " AppData" you need to enable hidden folders. For win7, click on "organise" top left of window. scroll down and click on "folder and search options".Click on "View". Scroll down and click on "Show hidden files, folders and drives. * NOTE; you do need to do this but If you do bare in mind that fsx sometimes has a habit of reseting to the default 1024 textures If you alter certain perameters and has nothing to do with this scenery addon. You can find out more by visiting the forums on the flight sim communities for the 'fsx.cfg' file and also other enhancements you may wish to use to tweak fsx.
