FS2004 Lockheed L-1011-385-1 Tristar Cathay Pacific Airways
-----------------------------------------------------------

This is a semi-photoreal repaint for Mike Stone's lovely L-1011 Tristar model, available from his site at www.pmstone.com

The Tristar is my favourite jet, and you'll regularly find me over the South China Sea returning to Kai Tak, Hong Kong on one of Cathay Pacific's services from Manila. I was lucky enough to fly jump seat for real on this very route a few times when I lived in Kong Kong. There are a couple of repaints already in Cathay livery for this aircraft available from other authors, both as freeware and payware, but this new livery is closer to how I remember the aircraft personally.

I spend most of my flying time in the cockpit (seems to make sense) and only view the aircraft in SPOT view when in cruise or for the occasional screenshot. If you are an 'eye-candy merchant' a.k.a. 'rivet counter', this paint is not for you. Starting with a photoreal base and having to enlarge and shape this to a three dimensional model does not offer the same level of sharpness as you will find elsewhere on some of the heavily textured aircraft available today; but in full screen view, she looks pretty good, I think. I have had to do considerable work on textures to 'make everything fit', and have hand made several, but I have avoided adding sharpness for the sake of it where it would detract from the overall look of this photoreal presentation. I hope you like it, anyway.

There are some good panels out there for the Tristar and even a fully operational INS system (see below). Bin that FMC and GPS! Fly her as she should be flown.

INSTALLATION:

1. Unzip cxL1011p.zip to a temporary folder, retaining folder names.

2. Move the folder 'texture.cxphoto' to your L-1011 aircraft folder (having installed Mike's aircraft first, of course - sl10115.zip).

3. Back up the AIRCRAFT.CFG file and then open it with a text editor. Under the exising [fltsim.xx] entries, insert this section, changing the [fltsim.xx] line to be the next in sequence e.g. [fltsim.4]:

[fltsim.xx]

ui_variation=Cathay Pacific VR-HOE
visual_damage=1
description=The venerable Lockheed L-1011 TriStar was designed as a medium to long haul airliner in the 250 seat range. The TriStar was well liked by pilots and passengers alike, and no greater tribute can be paid to this old workhorse than the fact that some L-1011's are still in front line service today, many years after its maiden flight. Cathay Pacific flew L-1011-385-1 Tristars regionally from Hong Kong Kai Tak airport to destinations such as Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines.

4. Save the file. You're done. Keep the screenshots and this README if you so desire, otherwise delete the temporary folder you created.

EXTRAS FOR THE TRISTAR:

As of this date, the following panels are available for FS2004 in addition to the pleasing panel that Mike includes with his aircraft:

1. Oliver Moser's 'Omwings' panel. If you were lucky enough to grab one of these when it was briefly released as freeware, good for you. If not, you'll have to wait for the impending PILOTS L-1011 payware release with which Oliver is now involved. See www.l1011tristar.com

2. PhotoTex Pro panel by Chris Alevritis - cal1011.zip at Avsim.com

3. Photorealistic panel by David Reed - panl1011.zip at Flightsim.com

4.  Panel by Marco Spada - l1011-k4.zip, l1011pch.zip at Flightsim.com

5. Panel by David Durst - available from his site at www.fspanels.com

6. Panel modification by Jake Dobbie of panel by Darim Rahmatallah/FFG, his original work being updated by David Randolph on further enhancements by "Giovanni Combattelli". No file name known.

A fully functional INS (Inertial Navigation System) is available which can be - and should be - used with the L-1011:

1. Delco Carousel IV-A INS by Marco Ravanello and Gianfranco Corrias - civa130.zip at Flightsim.com

The following soundset is configured for FS2004 (there are others from FS2002 that work well, also):

1. Lockheed L-1011 Tristar Sound by Aaron R. Swindle - l1011snz.zip at Flightsim.com

CREDITS:

This repaint is by Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont, Cathay nut and DC-3 fanatic when he's not flying Tristars.

Mike Stone, for the aircraft and texture set. Visit Mike's site at www.pmstone.com for a huge selection of aircraft from this prolific designer.

Garry Smith, of www.gjsmith.net, for permission to use some of his modified textures. I chose not to use any, eventually, with the exception of his engine exhausts which I modified slightly; but I appreciate his gesture. Garry has a great number of repaints at his own site.

Andrew Hunt, of AirTeamImages, for his photograph of VR-HOE at airliners.net. I wrote to Andrew to request his permission to base my work on his picture, but received no reply. As the photo has been used as a source of imagery rather than in its original form, I have gone ahead, trusting he would be happy with this.

Please bear in mind that these files are reworked as freeware for Mike Stone's freeware aircraft; they must not, under any circumstances, be bundled in commercial products of any kind or included in any package that is charged for or sold.

Final note: VR-HOE, together with many of her sisters at Cathay, was a L-1011-385-1. Mike's model is based on a L-1011-500, the lower capacity, slightly shorter, longer-range model. Live with it, it's a Tristar!
