********************************************************************** TREES LIBRARY - MODULE '0' (zero) Generic Static Tree Objects for FS2000 Release 1, 2000-12-10 -------------------------------------- by Gerrish Gray Copyright (C) 2000 G Gray ********************************************************************** This is the first in a series of libraries of static scenery objects for the depiction of trees in FS2000. The libraries are not useable by themselves - they are for use by - Scenery Designers, who will also need the Trees SDK Module released separately - Users of scenery developed with the Trees SDK The library module consists of - An FS2000 object library containing 1,290 FS2000 static objects - A set of 65 texture files in FS2000 Extended Bitmap format - A text file index, Trees_0.txt, for use by scenery designers in conjunction with the SDK. Not required by scenery users. These trees are the most realistic yet seen in FS and use new techniques specific to FS2000/CFS. This module (Module 0) contains the basic generic tree types needed by all users - other add-on libraries will contain additional specific tree types. All texture files etc. contained in the library are new work created by the author from independent resources and have not appeared previously as part of any flight simulator scenery release. INSTALLATION ============ The library and its supporting textures must be installed in the FS2000 folders in a place where the files will be visible to all scenery that makes use of them. There are two choices - a quick and simple approach - a more professional approach that requires modification to the FS2000 Sceney Library Quick Method ------------ Just add the library and textures to the default FS2000 files:- 1. Place the BGL file in the main FS2000 scenery folder (i.e. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2000\Scenery, or wherever you have installed your default FlightSim files). 2. Unzip the textures from 'texture.zip' into the main FS2000 texture folder (i.e. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2000\Texture ...) This method requires NO modification to the FS2000 Scenery Library and will work with all scenery that uses the Trees object libraries, however and wherever installed. Professional Approach --------------------- Alternatively, place the library and textures in a dedicated container in the same location as Microsoft place their own object libraries:- 1. Create a new folder with a suitable name within the 'scenedb' folder (e.g. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2000\scenedb\Trees) 2. Create sub-folders called 'scenery' and 'texture' within the new folder ( ...\scenedb\Trees\scenery and ...\scenedb\Trees\texture) 3. Place the BGL file in the new scenery folder and unzip the texture BMPs from 'texture.zip' into the new texture folder 4. Install the new path into the FS2000 Scenery Library, either by using the 'World, Scenery Library ...' menu option from within FS2000 or by manually editing 'scenery.cfg'. Give the new database entry a title like 'Trees Libraries'. For preference, place it at a low layer, e.g. layer 7, close to the built-in libraries, although it will work OK at any layer number. The only advantages of this method are that it is easier to maintain (and to find individual texture files if required), and there is possibly a small performance improvement as a result of the textures not having to be found from amongst the 1000's that tend to accumulate in the average simmer's main texture folder. And, heck, it's just plain more professional ... if you care! COPYRIGHT ========= This library is released as FREEWARE. Copyright (C) 2000 G Gray. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS =============== Many thanks to Martin Wright and his wonderful BMP2000 tool which I used to prepare the new texture files for use with FS2000. Without Martin and his tools this project would not have been possible. Happy Flight-Simming! Gerrish Gray Dec 2000 mailto:gerrish.gray@wimborne-dorset.fsnet.co.uk
