Westland Wessex of the Royal Air Force by Simshed The Westland Wessex was the first helicopter to have a gas turbine engine and was in the early 1960s adapted for the RAF to become a general-purpose helicopter capable of troop-carrying, air ambulance and ground attack roles. It entered RAF service in 1962, and did not finally retire until January 2003, being the main transport and battelfield support helicopter until the introduction of the Puma. The bright yellow RAF machines used for air-sea and mountain rescue duties became especially famous and saved many lives. This aircraft was designed for FS2004 by Simshed using FSDS 2 by Brian Franklin. Gauges were made by Jim Cooper. My thanks go to Antti Pankkonen and Arne Bartels for the use of their autopilot and hover gauges. Special thanks to Rick Piper for his work on the rotors.
