CFS II Framerates
The subject of frame rates in the flight simulation world has been tackled many times in the past, but now that we have a fantastic new sim out there, I feel we should take another look.. Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator II featuring some of the best aircraft and scenery ever has surprised me a bit with how well it can do with far less computer than I would have thought possible. Not all of us have a hot rod processor to smooth out the flights but with a few tweaks you can enjoy all the benefits this great package has to offer.
Microsofts minimum system requirements listed on the box are:
· Multimedia PC with a 266 MHz or higher processor
· Microsoft Windows 95 Operating System or later; or Microsoft Windows 2000
· 32 MB of RAM for Windows 95 Operating Systems or later; 64 MB of RAM for Windows 2000
· Quad Speed CD-ROM or faster
· Super VGA, 800x600 16-Bit Color Monitor
· DirectX 7 (Included on CD)
· 350 MB hard disk space (additional 50 MB of space required for DirectX 7 installation and swap file)
· Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device, joystick or flight yoke recommended
· Microsoft DirectSound 7. API-compatible sound card with speakers or headphones for audio
My system:
· Intel Pentium 200 Mghz processor
· 64 Mb ram
· Graphics Blaster Riva TNT 16mb PCI Video card
· Sound Blaster PCI 512 sound card
· Advent AV190 speakers with subwoffer
· 7200 rpm 6 gig hardrive
· 36x CD-ROM
· Logitec Wingman extreme joystick
· IBM VersatileScroll mouse (has 3 programmable side buttons I use for wingman commands)
· 17" Dell Ultrascan monitor
My inflight frame rates are between 16 and 23 FPS!!! I'm getting 13 to 15 on the ground and with outside views. I am seeing detailed complex scenery and using the weather options with no significant drop.
Here's how I set up the programs graphics:
· Screen resolution 640 x 480 x 16
· Dem Density low
· Terrain Texture 128
· Terrain Complexity 83
· Object Texture size 128
· Max Visibility 15 miles
· Aircraft shadows on
· ground shadows off
· Detail texturing on
· Virtual cockpit on
· effects high
· Target frame rate 30
Now let's talk about system resources. First reboot. Then watch the little processor activity light on the computer case and do not touch the mouse or keyboard until
the light has completely stopped. This allows the system time to stabilize. Right click
on My Computer and choose properties then select the performance tab. System resources should be 92 to 94%. If not, something is hogging all that precious Ram you need. To see what is running hit CTRL, ALT, DEL once to bring up the close program
dialog box. The only requirements I know of that you must have on are Explorer and Sys
Tray. I leave my programmable mouse on because I am using it in flight. You can turn off
anything else by (WIN 98) clicking start menu to programs then accessories to system
tools then selecting tools from upper menu then system configuration and finally the start-up tab. Be careful what you do here and I suggest you make sure you know the function of each item before you proceed. Here is an example of what I have but remember your system may have different requirements.

That's it. Anything else can be manually selected from the start menu if you want to run it. After all, this is about smooth Flight simulation not running screensavers and such. Now speaking of screensavers, they are notorious Ram hogs. I don't use them. Modern
monitors do not require them. My computer runs 24/7 and I do not have any problems. The same goes for wallpaper. I select none. At least turn your wallpaper off and reboot before you fly. Use windows disk cleanup utility to get rid of unneeded files in your temp folder and elsewhere. The next thing is Defragment your hardrive often. I do it at least daily. If your like me you take advantage of all the wonderful add-ons for CFS and CFS II available on the net and if you add, move and delete a lot of files, you need to Defrag often. If this sounds like a lot of work, it's not and should be part of your daily routine. It's just maintenance man and well worth the effort no matter what your system is.
Lastly for now I have found if I unchecked SMOOTH SCREEN FONTS I picked up a couple frame rates. I was worried I would not be able to run this great program at all but to my surprise it runs better than CFS Europe for me. My hats off to the folks at Microsoft
for this. Happy flying and may your frame rates grow large

PS I invite all to
make suggestions or just debate this subject with me. I will do my best to
answer all.
