Junkers Ju188

In 1939, The new Junkers Jumo 213 engine was in the advanced stages of development. To go with the engine, the company made what was basically an enlarged and streamlined Ju88. This had more efficient pointed wings and a large squarish tail. The Ju 188E-1 went into production with BMW 801s, because the powerful Jumo was still not ready.
The plant at Bernburg delivered 120 of several versions before mid-1943. Then the A-1 production version finally went into production, along with the A-3 Torpedo bomber. The D was a fast reconnaisance version, and the Ju188S was a family of high-speed aircraft, which were made for several duties, and these were capable of up to 435mph (696km/h). Some of these had a remote-controlled twin MG 131 tail turret. This development led into the Ju388. Altogether 1,100 Ju188s were built.
