CFS2/CFS Sopwith Camel. This aircraft was flown by C.M.McEwen McEwen joined the Canadian Army in 1916. In 1917, he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps. He served in Italy as a Sopwith Camel pilot, scoring 27 victories. He received the Military Cross (MC) , Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) with Bar in September 16, 1918 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in destroying 27 enemy aeroplanes". CFS2 F4U-1A #8 of Navy Squadron VF-17 Default Textures. This is a repaint of the stock F4U-1A TEXTURES ONLY. This aircraft represents the F4U-1A of Ens. Robert H. "Hal" Jackson just after "operation Cherry Blossom" The invasion of the Torokina Beach heads. VF-17 was assigned to cover TG 50.3 composed of USS Essex CV-9, USS Bunker Hill CV-17, USS Independance CVL-22 and 9 destroyers while the Task Group sent deckload strikes against Rabaul.This mission was the first where corsairs operationally landed on carriers at sea in the combat zone (Essex and Bunker Hill). Number 8 was also flown later in VF-17s 2 tours by LTJG Earl May on "special" missions incuding the infamous "Chatee Flambee" mission which was the first bombing mission carried out by F4Us.
