Led by former VF-17 Jolly Roger XO LCDR Roger Hedrick, and with 4 other frmer Jolly Rogers VF-84 and the two Marine F4U squadrons VMF-221 and VMF-451 brought the F4U strength on Bunker Hill to 71 Corsairs strong. The corsairs of Air Group 84 did a lot of damage to Japanese forces until Bunker Hill was hit by 2 kamakazis on 11 May. Joe Royal. 670K

VF-85 was designated as the "fighter" unit aboard Shangri La, and operated alongside their "fighter bomber" sister squadron VBF-85 which was equipped with F4U-1D corsairs.
