VBF-86 replaced 2 Marine squadrons VMF-216 and VMF-217 in F4U's shipboard operations aboard Wasp. VF-85 was designated as the "fighter" unit aboard Shangri La, and operated alongside their "fighter bomber" sister squadron VBF-85 which was equipped with F4U-1D corsairs.
