This is an historical campaign, based on the Khalkhin-Gol battles, also known as the Nomonhan Incident between the Soviet Union and the Empire of Japan in Mongolia. The conflict occurred in the border regions of Mongolia and Manchuria from 11 May until 15 September 1939. It began with a border dispute between Mongolia (a USSR ally) and Manchukuo (the name for the Japanese puppet government of occupied Manchuria).
Historically, the incident ended in a decisive Soviet victory. Neither side wanted to go to war, and especially the Japanese, once the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany signed their non-aggression pact. That would have meant that Japan would then have to fight the Soviet Union alone, without her Axis allies. Both sides wanted peace
This CFS2 campaign packet consists of only the Soviet side of the conflict, with 32 total missions, set up in a 23-mission long campaign, both air to air engagements and air to ground, offensive and defensive. In some cases, the numbers of aircraft are reduced proportionately because of the limitations of the sim. For example, in mission four, over 140 aircraft were involved in a massive dogfight, but I used only 70.
My sources rarely gave exact locations for the starting points/bases and target or engagement locations throughout the campaign. Therefore, I used a best guess for these. Also, the CFS2 map is relatively flat and though changes in elevation are noted in Mission Builder, hills, valleys and some rivers do not show well when you fly the rolling steppe terrain. Geographic features are rare and are also, with a few exceptions, a best guess, using the source maps.
Enjoy the air "war"!

An historical (with one "what if" mission) battle history of the USS Saratoga throughout the course of WW2. The player will find himself flying a fighter, divebomber or torpedo plane in randomly selected missions. Also, he may find himself randomly flying as a wingman, rather that the leader of the flight of bombers (but not fighters).

This is meant to be an historical campaign, based on the carrier battles of the Battle of the Eastern Solomons (22-25 August 1942) and the Battle of Santa Cruz (25-27 October 1942. I named the campaign “Desperate Battles” because at this stage of the war the US Navy was fighting uphill. That is, they had fewer resources than the Japanese, in many ways inferior aircraft and less experienced pilots. In both battles, the Japanese are the attackers and the USN has to fight a defensive struggle.
The dates, times and locations of each engagement (mission) are as close as possible to the actual ones. Ship names, locations and courses as well as aircraft numbers and types are as accurate as possible. Attack angles and targets are set up to give historical results, but you, the player can change history (slightly). The campaign consists of various missions; recon, strike, defensive and land based as well as carrier based. Random chance plays a big role in the numbers of defensive aircraft and in some cases, whether or not a target will be there at all. Call signs
and aircraft skins however are not historical. Carrier task forces are set up to sail into a 15 knot wind on takeoff and landing. Using the alternate dps provided for the Usio ships and the FDG alternate files for US aircraft should make this campaign even more realistic and challenging.

CFS1 Aircraft & Missions:
Dambuster V 4-900 for CFS1: "CFS1 is aloive and kicking even in 2009". Probably the ultimate in DB and B1 Lancasters for CFS1. Replaces all previous DB related releases from 2004-2006 and provides improved reliability in XP. Forward gun alignment is now for a panel zoom ratio of 0.50 OR 0.25. This required updated dp files for each loadout and therefore, for user convience and so as not to interfere with any similar aircraft you may have installed, full re-named aircraft are provided. The project is still based on Roger Lowery's RAF662 B1 Lancaster's VNE, ARG and Keith Clifford's Dambuster and Grand Slam aircraft. Bomber Command 617 and 460 (RAAF) Squadron Missions including a Tallboy raid on the Moehne. Keith Clifford's AJG is also supplied as a CFS1 MultiPlayer version. Pilot's should note that flying a CFS1 mission with a MP aircraft using the TG2 gun aiming program is difficult. After sitting in the Pilot's seat of a working Lancaster in 2007, the CFS1 panels are no longer "widescreen" the centre post has been put back. A "captured" analogue ME262 altitude gauge by Bernd Drefahl is used as a ground radar gauge to effectively achieve +60 feet when low flying. Maps are based on Paul Levesque's CFS v1 map. A simple navigation panel with Chuck Dome's GPS gauges and Scott Macmillan's continuous recording engine gauges are provided. RAF Scampton airfield is by Terry Baldwin. ABBA Duxford and ABBA Manston scenery by Mike Rennie & John Cooper. This project has not been tested in Vista. Package by Ross McLennan, FILE NAME: z_DBP900.zip 13M.

Bridge Too Far - Mosquitoes Over Willems Barracks In preparation
for the kick-off of Operation Market Garden large numbers of bombing
sorties were flown against strategic and tactical targets throughout
the corridor. A general saturation bombing in the areas of Wolfheze,
Oosterbeck, Nijmegen and Eindhoven by the mediums and heavies began
around 0800 and lasted for three hours. In contrast your target is
a very specific one, the Willems Barracks Complex just to the west
of Arnhem. Because of the massive retreat of the Wehrmacht through
Arnhem in the past two weeks there is a good probability that the
barracks are occupied. The target is very close to civilian homes
so they've called low level precision bombing capability of the Mossie's
to flatten it. Includes mission and scenery file for the Mosquito
base at Thorney Island. Requires P.H.F. Burnage's Mosquito FB VI.

THE BIG SHOW
Exclusive to this site, this is a 33 mission campaign interpretation
of Pierre Clostermann's classic book. Missions range from training
flights, to one to one duels, to mass dog fights and even a formation
fly past. While all of the scenery and most of the aircraft are
default, six fly able aircraft are also included. These efforts
are dedicated to the memory of all those, regardless of nationality
or politics, who took part in the aerial campaigns around the world
between 1939 and 1945. RICHARD STEELE
