At the time of its construction, Barkston Heath in common with a number of other airfields in the Grantham area had been planned for the RAF's No. 7 Group. In late 1943, Barkston Heath was made available to the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force and designated as USAAF station 483. It was earmarked for basing troop carrier units scheduled to be transferred from Sicily to participate in the forthcoming cross-Channel invasion, Operation "Overlord" American 61 TCG aircraft based at Barkston Heath carried British paratroops on the ill-fated operation Market Garden. The USAAF returned control of the airfield to the Air Ministry in June 1945 when the war in Europe ended. Barkston Heath was used by No 256 Maintenance Unit and No 2 RAF Regiment. Beginning in May 1948., RAF Barkston Heath has the Naval and Army Elements of No. 3 Flying Training School (3 FTS) which, for a period between approximately 1995-2010 operated the Slingsby T67M260 Firefly two-seat trainer. RAF Deopham Green is a former Royal Air Force station located near Deopham Green 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Attleborough, Norfolk, England. Built to the usual class A layout for the Americans the station was occupied by the B17g's of 452 Bomb Group in January 1944 and throughout the remainder of the war. The station was handed back to the RAF after the war when the Americans returned to the United States. The airfield was closed in 1948.

CFS1 - The Westland Wapiti The Westland Wapiti was a two-seat general-purpose biplane and as requested by the Air Ministry, incorporated in its design, several de Havilland D.H.9A component parts. The prototype Wapiti first flew in March 1927 and was awarded an initial order of 25 production Mk I included one that specially modified with a more luxurious rear cockpit for the Prince of Wales to fly in. Mk I was powered by a 425hp Bristol Jupiter VI engine, but subsequent Mk II and Mk IIA had 450hp Jupiter VI and 475hp Jupiter VIIIF or similar engines. There were a small number of lengthened Wapiti Mk V and some unarmed Mk VI trainers which brought the total produced for the Royal Air Force to 501. The Westland Wapiti also served the Air Forces of Australia, South Africa (where Wapitis were built under licence), Canada, India and China. Les Stone 1st Dec 2010
