CFS1 Bristol Bulldog twin pack. Finnish Air Force & Spanish Republican Air Force. The Bristol Bulldog Mk II was used by Spanish Republicans forces to fighting the Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), remaining in use until the Battle of Santander, flown mainly by foreign volunteer pilots enlisted in the International Brigades. Bristol Bulldogs MK IV were the first aircraft of the Finnish Air Force to make contact with Soviet bomber and escorting fighter in the opening days of the Winter War (1939-40). The Bulldogs fought well against their Soviet opponent, gaining six kills by five pilots for the loss of one of their own, the types shot down being two Polikarpov I-16s and four Tupolev SB-2s, both of which were quite superior in terms of technology compared to the Bulldog. In fact, the very first aerial victory of Finnish Air Force was achieved by a Bulldog piloted by SSgt Toivo Uuttu on 1 December 1939, over an I-16. The Bulldog continued in service during the subsequent Continuation War (1941-44), however they were later relegated to training duties in the 'Continuation War' as more modern aircraft became available.
