The Akron Rigid Airship: This is my impression of the U.S. Naval Airship, the " Akron", based on some old photos.The Akron made her first flight to Washington. The Airship was commmissioned a U.S. Naval Vessel on November 2, 1931. The Akron ran into a storm off the New Jersey Coast on April 3, 1933 and crashed into the sea. Seventy Three men perished aboard the ship. It signaled the beginning of the end of an era of lighter than air ships.
