This aircraft is an evolution of the Dornier 328 turboprop and was one of the last civil jets constructed by Dornier. First flight in 1998, 83 aircraft were built until 2002. Alphasim's classic rendition of this essential naval bomber, updated to FSX mdlX format, animations and materials. The largest aircraft ever designed for regular ship-board use, the A3D (A-3B, post 1962 tri-service) was designed by the brilliant Ed Heinemann at Douglas Aircraft. The navy 1949 specification was a demanding document, calling for a ship-board aircraft with medium bomber speed, warload and range. Most manufacturers responded with 120,000 lb behemoths, sea-going B-47's intended to operate from the then un-built super carrier United States. Heinemann thought BuAir had their heads up their auspufrhor's, and designed his bomber to fly off the Essex class ships at 70,000lbs. The rest is history. FSX/FS2004 Spitfire MK VIII The success of the Mk IX reduced the importance of the Mk VIII. Although the first production model was completed in November 1942, it took until June 1943 for the first squadron to be equipped with the model. The first squadron to use it was No. 145, based on Malta. By the summer of 1943 the crisis in the Mediterranean was in the past, and the Mk VIII saw extensive overseas duty, often in a ground attack role. U.S. and Aussi version.
