The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is possibly, whichever way one looks at it, the most famous of all Allied bomber types that served over World War 2 Europe; they hold this prestigious position, because they were available in far greater numbers than any other bomber used in that theatre, only possibly to be followed by the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Some B-17 looked very well after their air-crews by bringing them safely home after sustaining some serious battle damage inflicted by the Luftwaffe.
